If you’ve noticed your gums receding cause exposing more of the tooth root, causing sensitivity or making your smile look longer. You’re not alone! Gum recession is incredibly common, and many patients worry it means they’ll need invasive grafting surgery. For mild to moderate cases, especially if you have thinner gum tissue, we now have gentle injectable options that can help thicken and strengthen your gums right here in the office.
Injectable Collagen Treatments for Gums:
These are minimally invasive injections that work by stimulating your body’s own natural healing response. Instead of cutting and grafting tissue from the roof of your mouth, we use biocompatible materials that encourage your gums to regenerate thicker, firmer tissue on their own.
Here are the two current dominant options in the world:
A) Linerase (Injectable Atelocollagen)
This is pure, micronized Type I equine collagen (the telopeptide has been removed to make it extremely gentle and low-allergy). After a quick reconstitution, tiny amounts (just 0.05 mL per spot) are injected directly into the keratinized gingiva. It acts like a scaffold that wakes up your fibroblasts—the cells that make collagen—so your gums gradually become thicker and more resilient. Results build over 2–4 short sessions spaced a couple of weeks apart. Patients often notice less bleeding, firmer tissue, and sometimes even a slight reduction in recession depth. It’s a beautifully “pure regeneration” approach with minimal immediate volume but excellent long-term tissue remodeling. This is not FDA approved yet in the US though.
B) Radiesse (Calcium Hydroxylapatite)
This is a dual-action biostimulator made of tiny synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel (plus a touch of lidocaine for comfort in the “+” version of Radiesse). It gives a little immediate support while powerfully stimulating your body to produce new collagen and elastin over the following months. Many of my patients love that they can see and feel a difference sooner. It’s FDA-cleared for dental and periodontal use, and studies show it can improve gingival thickness, reduce recession, and ease tooth sensitivity for 6–12 months or longer in some cases. Typical protocol is repeating the injection every 6-12 months.
How Do These Compare?
Both are performed in the chair with local anesthetic if needed—no stitches, no downtime, and you can go right back to your day.
Linerase is all about pure collagen regeneration—ideal if you want the most natural, gradual rebuilding. Radiesse offers a bit of instant plumpness plus longer-lasting collagen and elastin stimulation—great when you want quicker visible improvement.
Neither one of these products replaces traditional surgery for advanced recession, but for many patients with thin gums or early recession, these injections can stabilize the problem, reduce sensitivity, and help you avoid more invasive procedures.
Summary:
So, if you’ve been noticing receding gums, tooth sensitivity, or simply want to protect your smile for the future, we’d love to evaluate whether injectable collagen or calcium hydroxylapatite could be right for you. It’s quick, comfortable, and can make a real difference in how your gums look and feel.
