Our Teeth Cleaning Experience

Many patients dread having had dental hygienists clean their teeth. We know that many have grouped these professional cleanings with auto accidents and IRS audits on the scale of enjoyable experiences. We can’t really make teeth cleaning fun, but unlike almost every other dental practice, our dentists apply their knowledge and experience to make them thorough and relatively painless.

For starters, 95% of our dental cleaning appointments in the Bay Area begin and end on time (another rarity at other offices). We manage our time well so we won’t waste yours.

The best news is that our dentists make you very comfortable with massage chairs, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and VR goggles so that you can watch everything Netflix has to offer or listen to your favorite music or podcast with noise canceling headphones. If you need extensive work, we can apply an anesthetic and our dentists pride themselves in having a gentle touch.

What to expect during your teeth cleaning

Our dentists will thoroughly clean your teeth beyond what your experiences have been with hygienists. First, we remove any plaque that has built up on the surface of your teeth due to your own efforts to brush and floss. If it has hardened into what is called tartar, we have the tools and techniques to even completely remove that, so that you have a new opportunity to prevent plaque and tartar from developing at all. We will discuss how best to brush and floss, which few people have been taught to do correctly.

We may recommend that you add a water flosser, a small bristle brush to get into tight spaces, a better toothpage, or a dental-grade mouthwash to prevent periodontal bacteria from flourishing.

We share your ultimate goal of preserving your teeth for the rest of your life. We will also polish your teeth to restore and preserve their shine.

The entire teeth cleaning itself takes between 45 and 60 minutes, but if you have not had one in a while, plan for 90 minutes. If you have not had a recent physical exam, your dentist will look for tooth cracks, decay, inadequate saliva, warning signs of oral cancer, and other oral health issues.

Can my Teeth Cleaning be Covered by Insurance?

It might be! Most insurance plans pay for a teeth cleaning or two each year. If yours doesn’t or if you don’t have dental insurance, you’re still in luck! At Soothing Dental, we offer our own membership plans. These are straight-forward and include unlimited free teeth cleanings by our dentists and a lot more. Even better, there is no annual cap on our overall services or benefits.
