What are black triangles?

Black triangle is a type of spacing that occurs between the point where two teeth touch and the gum beneath, commonly referred to as a black triangle due to its hallmark appearance. These black triangles have many causes including gum recession, orthodontic tooth movement, tooth wear, or decay, to name a few. Small triangles pose only a minor cosmetic detriment, but as the grow they can age a smile and make a person look “long in the tooth”.

How can it be treated?

When large areas of the tooth need to be restored in order to close these spaces or black triangles, either Invisalign or a porcelain veneer is the best choice. However, sometimes a space or black triangle can be cosmetically closed with a composite resin filling or a composite resin veneer. This allows the dentist to restore the tooth in a single appointment and preserve more of the patient’s natural tooth structure. A very conservative approach, frequently resin veneers can close spaces and black triangles with NO drilling on the teeth prior to placement of the resins. Sculpting, coloring, and polishing are all done in one visit, by hand. Excellent technique is crucial in this procedure to achieve a natural, cosmetically pleasing outcome.
